The history of the department dates back to the founding of the College of Transportation and Telecommunications Engineering. In 1993, the Department of Materials Science and Technology and the Department of Vehicle Manufacturing merged to form the Department of Materials Science and Vehicle Manufacturing.

On January 1, 2012, a new chapter began in the life of the Faculty of Engineering with the establishment of the AUDI Hungaria Vehicle Engineering Department Group. The group consisted of three departments: the Department of Materials Science and Vehicle Manufacturing was split into the Department of Materials Science and Technology, the Department of Vehicle Manufacturing, and the Department of Internal Combustion Engines. Following organizational changes in the following years, it will continue to operate as part of the Audi Hungaria Faculty of Vehicle Engineering under the name Department of Materials Science and Machine Design from August 1, 2025.

The department carries out educational tasks in a number of scientific fields, the most important of which are: materials science, mechanical technologies, and quality assurance. The department also contributes to the education of mechanical engineers, transportation engineers, vehicle engineers, mechatronics engineers, technical managers, and engineering teachers. In the bachelor's program, it is responsible for the automotive manufacturing, manufacturing systems, and quality management specializations in the mechanical engineering program, and for the professional training in the quality management specialization in the technical management program. In the MSc program, he is responsible for the mechatronics engineering major and also participates in the automotive engineering MSc program.
